Leadership development is a business. A big industry! And yet I don’t know of a state in which it’s regulated (if I am wrong, contact me and I ‘ll correct that statement). You pay your funds and you also take your opportunities.

Having said all of that, direction development is large because it is essential and at least some of it functions. I know!

My recommendation? Locate a leadership development programme that offers components of both group and individual learning. Maybe some workshops or class modules with self-study and one-to-one training built in or with coaching as an addon.

Academic programmes are those that are based upon new research that extends the body of knowledge, or upon the learning of theory. They’ve been primarily cognitive or cerebral (to do with all the head) and lead to academic qualifications, for example university degrees.

Vocational programmes are concerned with the application of education to actual scenarios and are somewhat more practical in their nature. Although they are able to also result in vocational qualifications they often focus on skills and less on theory.

Actually, the “or” in the title isn’t clear cut. Some university degrees are vocational in nature. Yet, there will still be a large quantity of academic / intellectual / theory in any degree programme.

Many organisations run corporate leadership training scheme, or vocational direction programmes, for their leaders. Some also offer routes to academic programmes for people who do well on vocational ones.

My recommendation? Think by what you need and the way you learn. In the event that you intend to develop practical abilities – opt to get a vocational programme. Locate a suitable academic course of study should you’d like to comprehend the theoretical basis of direction first.

Bespoke or open programmes

They have a tendency to be run “in-business”.

Self-growth is what you happen to be doing now.

Self-growth is an important company to formal programmes provided by others. They’re keen and keen to learn.

But self-development is usually not enough by itself. At minimum find a learning buddy (someone in your personal situation who you are able to learn with), a direction coach (someone who is able to guide you get through the learning process and provide feedback and help) or a mentor (a shrewd and more experienced leader who you are able to turn to when you need help, guidance or feedback).
